Things That Go Bang Home Page

`A physical experiment which makes a bang is always worth more than a quiet one. Therefore a man cannot strongly enough ask of Heaven: if it wants to let him discover something, may it be something that makes a bang. It will resound into eternity.`

Georg Christoph Lichtenberg 1742-1799

    Wednesday, April 30

    1. Last day of math and physics class!  Meet for lunch after class!
    2. Math PS 17 should be done before you take your final exam.
    3. If you have taken detailed math notes (almost) every day (or have copied someone else's notes), and you would be willing to let me photocopy your notebook, please let me know.  This will not impact your grade in any way, but I will use it to improve future versions of this course.  (I would not borrow your notes until after the final.)  Thank you!! - Prof Spence

    Saturday, May 3

        1.    Inauguration Day!  Physics final is now posted here.  Note that I have moved back the time at which the exam is due to 4 PM instead of 9 AM on Wednesday, May 7.  This should give you the opportunity to be well-rested before taking the exam.  You should leave yourself 3-1/2 hours of uninterrupted time (including one 1/2-hour break).  Remember that your notebooks are due with your exams!

    Sunday, May 4

        1.    Physics office hours on the morning of Monday, May 5.  Pre-requested problems 9 AM-10 AM.  10-11 AM for concepts.  There are some interesting results from the post-course concept test.  The good news is that the average score went up about 50% (relative to the pre-course test) for the class as a whole.  The bad news is that the final scores are only about 70% (absolute score).  This is better than for most post-freshman E&M experiences, but it signals areas that might be useful to review quickly before the final - that's what I'm planning for 10-11 AM.

    Monday, May 5

        1.    Physics Exam #3 is graded.  Come and see me for 5 minutes (not the usual post-exam half-hour) for your exam grade and a realistic view of your status going into the final.

    Upcoming due dates and assignments

    Monday, April 28

    1. Office hours in the classroom at 9 AM (please try to send requests for problems that you want me to do in advance).  NO WEBASSIGN today - it should be clear to you that we will be doing the rest of Ch 37 in class.  Exam #3 on all the material since Exam #2 (i.e., Ch 33-37, excluding Ch 36) will be available tonight, and will be due NLT Friday, May 2.  It should be a 90-minute exam.

    Wednesday, April 30

    1. Last day of physics class.  I'm willing to do some review if you have some specific questions that you ask in advance.  For whatever time is left I want to share the excitement of walking in Einstein's shoes in developing the concepts of his Special Theory of Relativity - we will not have time to really do this justice, and this material will not be on either Exam #3 or the final.  I will also be distributing copies of the Electricity and Magnetism Pre-Test that you took at the beginning of the semester so that we can evaluate how much we learned this semester (as a group - your grade on this will not affect your final grade).  These concepts may help you determine what you know or don't know for the final, so you should want to take the test in class today (if you don't, you'll have to come to my office sometime later this week to take it).

    Friday, May 2

    1. Physics Exam #3 is due in my mailbox at 5:00 PM.  It can be found here.  Final exam (due at noon on Wednesday) will be posted tonight or tomorrow morning.  The physics final will be a three-hour exam that covers the material that was covered on Exams #1 and #2, as well as the material in Ch 34 that completed our description of Maxwell's Equations.

    Monday, May 5

        1.    Office hours 9-10 AM (please E-mail requested problems in advance).  There will also be a general pre-final concept review 10-11 based on a quick analysis of the post-course concept test.

    Tuesday, May 6

    1. TTGB Math Exam: 9am-12pm.

    Wednesday, May 7

    1. Physics final and notebooks are due in my office or my mailbox by 4 PM.  You can pick up your notebook on the table across from my mailbox on Friday, May 9 after noon.
